While dwarfed by the giant Deinocheirus, at 6 m (20 feet) long Gallimimus is still a large ornithomimid, or ‘ostrich-mimic’ dinosaur. It lived during the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia, where it may have enjoyed an omnivorous diet while trying to avoid the large Asian tyrannosaurs, like Tarbosaurus, that it shared its habitat with. Gallimimus presumably escaped predators by running away, as its long legs were clearly built for fast running. That speed was famously put to use when “flocking this way” in the original Jurassic Park movie, which transformed it from a fairly obscure ornithomimid to probably the best-known member of its group.
