This is the holotype of Tyrannosaurus rex — the specimen on which Henry Fairfield Osborn based the species in 1905. Originally catalogued at the American Museum as AMNH 973, it was sold to the Carnegie Museum in 1941, during the Second World War, out of concern that were New York to be bombed, the only two specimens of T. rex might be lost; the specimen has carried the number CM 9380 ever since.
While it holds the distinction of being the type specimen, CM 9380 is far from the most complete specimen, with part of the skull and jaws, the shoulders, some ribs and vertebrae from the back, and most of the pelvis and a hind limb. The famous mount in the American Museum is based on AMNH 5027, but casts of the shoulder, upper arm bone (humerus) and hind legs from CM 9380 had to be used to fill in the missing parts.
