Smilodon is the classic saber-toothed cat from the Pleistocene of North and South America. It is known from thousands of individuals at the La Brea tar pits. Smilodon had elongate canines, powerfully built forequarters, and a short tail. It is often referred to colloquially as a “saber-toothed tiger”, but neither Smilodon nor other saber-toothed cats are particularly close relatives of tigers. It does sound cool though.
