The living platypus of eastern Australia — an egg-laying monotreme with a soft, electroreceptive snout, webbed feet, and, in males, a venomous ankle spur. Although the snout looks superficially like a duck’s bill (and they are often called “duck-billed platypus” in daily conversation), the skin is smooth and soft, and generally not at all like the beak of a duck.
