An early large-bodied theropod from the Early Jurassic of Antarctica, distinguished by a peculiar bony crest rising above its eyes. The superficial similarity to a pompadour hairstyle led to its nickname “Elvisaurus” after the most famous rock and roll star to sport the hairdo.

Paleontology in Antarctica is challenging - most of the rocks are buried under ice, and the ones that are exposed are only warm enough to work on for a few weeks out of the year, so Cryolophosaurus is still one of the few dinosaurs known from the continent (alongside its potential prey, the bipedal sauropodomorph Glacialisaurus). In the Early Jurassic, at almost 8 meters (25 feet) long, Cryolophosaurus was among the largest predators of its time.
