In the Late Triassic dinosaurs were still working on ascending, but in the water some marine reptiles had become enormous. Shonisaurus was a giant ichthyosaur (not a dinosaur), growing to at least 15 meters (50 feet) long, and weighing as much as 30 tonnes.

Their skulls were filled with lots of teeth that, while small for the size of the skull, were none-the-less large in absolute terms, which probably enabled Shonisaurus and its giant relatives to hunt larger fish, and even other marine reptiles.
