Pontosaurus was a Late Cretaceous marine lizard from the limestone beds of Lebanon. It belongs to a group of slender aquatic lizards known as dolichosaurs. Pontosaurus had a drawn-out, snake-like body and neck, and belonged to the reptile group that also gave rise to mosasaurs, and possibly to snakes themselves (the exact phylogenetic position of mosasaurs and snakes continues to be debated).
